Rabbit Control Western Australia

The BAM Act 2007 (Biosecurity and Agriculture Management) declares feral rabbits as pests, meaning any landowners who have a rabbit problem are responsible for controlling them. Rabbits multiply quickly and will spread to other nearby locations. When you are looking for a professional, capable and experienced with rabbit control Western Australia reach out to us at Foxnferal. Take action swiftly to stop the problem and protect your land and property.

How to maintain control

You must obey the rules and laws surrounding control, which means using a professional to handle it. It is also important to use experts like us who comply with the Animal Welfare Act 2002, and ensure animals are dealt with in a humane way. Methods for control are;

  1. Trapping - this does not include foothold traps which are illegal. Some areas need permits from the DPIRD, (Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development). Effective      when populations are lower.
  2. Baiting - can only be done in certain areas, and there is a process that has to be followed, and only certain poisons are legal.
  3. Exclusion fencing - it would need to be a type that is buried beneath the ground so they cannot tunnel under.
  4. Removal of grounds where they breed and shelter.
  5. Biological - the Rabbit Haemorrhagic Disease naturally helps keep the numbers lower.
  6. Shooting - This is the option we offer at Fox ‘n Feral. It is the requirement that shooters take out the rabbit with a single shot to the chest or head.

It is important to know that it is not legal to trap rabbits yourself and then release them somewhere away from your property. You are just sending them to be a problem at another location.

Why rabbits?

Interestingly, most rabbits today can be traced back to 24 wild rabbits brought over and released in the late 1850s close to Geelong. In 70 years, they had spread across half of Australia. Initially, the idea was that they would be a food source.

But their numbers were not controlled. Over the years, they have caused severe damage to crops, soil erosion, overgrazed on native plants and grazed on pasture meant for livestock. They are the most common pest in the country.

By the 1990s, it was estimated they cost the country $600 million a year. Now with some rabbit control, Western Australia has it down to a little over $200 million. In Western Australia both the feral rabbit and the domestic rabbit are labled as pests.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. How much does professional pest control cost in Western Australia?

Costs depend on rabbit numbers, property size, location, and whether rabbit control is part of a broader pest management program.

2. Why are rabbits such a problem on farms?

Rabbits damage crops, pasture, fences, and native vegetation while competing with livestock for valuable feed resources.

3. Is shooting enough to control rabbits?

Shooting is often most effective when combined with integrated methods such as warren ripping, baiting, and biological control programs.

4. How quickly do rabbit populations recover?

Rabbit populations can rebound rapidly if breeding sites remain active, making follow-up management essential.
